The KBC1126-NU is an industry-standard Keyboard Controller (KBC) and Embedded Controller (EC) IC developed specifically for laptops by SMSC (now under the umbrella of Microchip Technology). It is provided in an industrial LQFP-128 (leaded surface-mount) package structure. It manages fundamental hardware processes on the motherboard, such as keyboard/touchpad inputs, system power sequencing, battery charge management, and thermal monitoring. It does not feature an internal programmable flash memory (eFlash). It operates by reading its operating commands (firmware) from an external EC ROM (SPI Flash) IC or the main BIOS chip located on the motherboard. Therefore, there is no need to program the chip directly using I/O programming devices after assembly. It is a critical input/output controller frequently replaced in the motherboard repairs of older generation laptops, especially HP and Compaq models, in situations where the device fails to trigger or does not recognize input devices like the keyboard/touchpad.
