The NPCX797FCOBX is a high-performance Embedded Controller (EC) and Keyboard Controller (KBC) IC developed by Nuvoton based on the ARM Cortex-M4 architecture for notebook motherboards. Unlike standard leaded I/O controllers, it is provided in an industrial BGA-144 (144 solder balls) package structure and requires BGA soldering techniques during the assembly process. It manages basic I/O (input/output) processes such as keyboard and touchpad interfaces, power sequencing, battery charge management, and thermal monitoring (fan control, temperature sensors) on the motherboard. As part of the advanced NPCX series architecture, this hardware features an internal programmable eFlash (Embedded Flash) memory. In hardware designs where there is no external SPI ROM (EC Flash) unit connected to this chip, it is a technical necessity to program the internal memory with the appropriate firmware for the specific motherboard via the JTAG / keyboard connector interface before or after assembly to initiate the system cycle.
