What is PCM8990? 

• It is a PCM (Phase Change Material) based thermal interface material (TIM) with high thermal conductivity. 
• Used instead of thermal paste and is extra resistant to the "pump-out" effect commonly experienced with pastes. 
• It has a thickness of 0.25mm. 
• It changes phase and transitions into a paste form when the temperature of the heat source reaches 52°C. (BLT) 
• Provides high thermal conductivity in both pad and paste forms. 
• Designed to minimize thermal resistance between the electronic component and the heatsink by spreading homogeneously over the surface. 
• Long-term reliability: Successfully passed 1000 hours of thermal aging test at 150°C and 1000 cycles of T/C-B testing. 
• Low thermal impedance: <0.03 °C·cm²/W, making it ideal for high-performance devices.

Application 

1. Carefully clean the surfaces to be applied, ensuring absolutely no dust, dirt, grease, or residue remains. 
2. If the ambient temperature is high, the thermal pad may stick to the protective film as it might partially change phase; therefore, keep the product in the freezer in its ziploc bag for about 10 minutes before use. 
3. Cut the pad to fit the size of the die (DIE) (cutting slightly larger is acceptable). 
4. Easily peel off one side of the protective film using the tear-off tab included in the package. 
5. Carefully place the pad onto the chip and press gently from one end to the other to ensure it adheres smoothly to the surface. 
6. Carefully remove the other protective film using the second tear-off tab, then mount the heatsink. 
7. After the burn-in phase it reaches the minimum BLT (Bond Line Thickness), thus PCM can not be reused if the heatsink is removed. A new PCM must be applied.
